An Ohio law firm has prevailed in federal court against the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, defeating allegations that it misled debtors about the role lawyers played in collecting consumer debts.

U.S. District Judge Donald C. Nugent ruled that the CFPB had failed to prove its case against the firm, Weltman, Weinberg & Reis Co., which the agency sued in April 2017 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. Weltman Weinberg, founded in the 1920s and headquartered in Cleveland, focuses on creditors’ rights. Twenty-five shareholders, all of whom are attorneys, own the firm.
