An Austin lawyer this week began a 17-year prison sentence for his role in a conspiracy to help an international fugitive bilk 500 investors out of millions of dollars in fraudulent stock and real estate investments.

Patrick Lanier must also pay $37 million in restitution in the case. He plans to appeal his conviction for one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, 13 counts of wire fraud, one count of harboring and concealing a person from arrest and one count of assisting a federal offender.
